The question behind this page
How big can my signboard legally be in my council area — and will it still be readable from the road?
Key Takeaways
- There is no national maximum signboard size in Malaysia. Your local council sets it.
- DBKL publishes hard numbers: double-sided vertical signs max 7 ft x 3 ft (first floor only); horizontal signs up to 40 ft x 4 ft on floors 1-4.
- MPAJ and Klang cap by proportion — the sign may not exceed 30% of the building facade.
- The binding limit is usually your own shop lot frontage (typically 20-22 ft), not the council ceiling.
- Bigger costs more every year. Many councils charge the licence per square metre, annually.
- Letter height decides readability: about 1 inch per 10 ft of viewing distance to be readable, 1 inch per 4 ft to read comfortably.

The Short Answer
Malaysia has no single national maximum signboard size. Size is set by the local council (Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan) that licenses your sign, and the rules differ meaningfully between them.
In practice you will meet one of three kinds of limit:
- Hard dimensional caps — DBKL in Kuala Lumpur publishes actual figures, such as 7 ft x 3 ft for a double-sided vertical sign.
- Proportional caps — several Selangor councils cap the signboard at 30% of the building facade area.
- Frontage caps — the signboard must not exceed the width of your own shop lot. This one applies almost everywhere.
Before you design anything, read your council's guide: our complete guide to signboard licences in Malaysia explains the licensing process, and the signboard law guide covers the Bahasa Malaysia prominence rule that decides your text layout.
Is There a National Maximum Signboard Size?

No. Advertisement and signboard licensing in Malaysia sits with local authorities under the Local Government Act 1976, and each council issues its own garis panduan (guidelines) for signboards in its area. There is no federal dimension that overrides them.
This is why you will find contradictory numbers online. A "maximum size" quoted by a KL signmaker is a DBKL number and simply does not apply in Ipoh, Penang or Johor Bahru. The only size that matters is the one your council will approve.
What is broadly consistent nationwide are the safety and obstruction rules: your sign must not block the five-foot way, pedestrian walkways, drains, road sightlines, windows, fire exits or emergency access. Those constraints often bite before the dimensional cap does.
Maximum Signboard Size by Council (2026)

Here is what the major councils actually specify. Each row links to our full application guide for that council.
| Council | Area | Size Rule |
|---|---|---|
| DBKL | Kuala Lumpur | Double-sided vertical: 7 ft (H) x 3 ft (W), first floor only. Horizontal: up to 40 ft (L) x 4 ft (W) on the 4th floor and below. General signboard height 1.2 m - 2.4 m, not exceeding storefront width. Lightbox / 3D lettering max 30 cm thickness. Minimum 5 ft from drains and road reserves. — DBKL guide |
| MBSA | Shah Alam | Must not exceed the width of your shop lot frontage. Projecting signs need minimum 2.6 m ground clearance. Must not obstruct windows, fire exits or emergency access. — MBSA guide |
| MPAJ | Ampang Jaya | Must not exceed 30% of the building facade area. No obstruction of walkways, five-foot ways or road visibility. — MPAJ guide |
| MBDK / MPK | Klang | Must not exceed 30% of the building facade. Must not protrude beyond the building line without special approval. — Klang guide |
| MBPP | Penang Island | Zone-based. Commercial zones allow signage proportional to building frontage; residential and mixed-use zones are smaller with subdued lighting; the George Town Heritage Zone is the most restrictive, limiting dimensions, materials, colours and illumination. — MBPP guide |
| MBPJ | Petaling Jaya | No published blanket dimension; size is approved from the signboard design mockup you submit, which must state exact dimensions. — MBPJ guide |
| MPSJ | Subang Jaya | Approved from your submitted mockup and premise photographs; frontage and obstruction rules apply. — MPSJ guide |
| MPKj | Kajang | Full-colour mockup with dimensions, colours, materials and fonts required with the application. — MPKj guide |
| MPS | Selayang, Batu Caves, Rawang, Gombak, Kepong | Dimensions assessed at application under the Lesen Papan Iklan. — MPS guide |
| MPSepang | Cyberjaya, Salak Tinggi, Dengkil, KLIA | Dimensions assessed at application. — MPSepang guide |
| MBI | Ipoh | Dimensions submitted with the e-Lesen application. — MBI guide |
UMAKE tip: where a council does not publish a hard number, it is not a free-for-all — it means the officer approves the dimensions on the mockup you submit. Draw the sign to scale against a photo of your shopfront and the approval is usually straightforward.

The Rule That Really Decides Your Size

For the overwhelming majority of Malaysian businesses, the binding constraint is not the council's headline maximum. It is your own shopfront.
Three limits apply nearly everywhere:
- Not wider than your lot. The signboard must stay within your shop lot frontage. Encroaching over the neighbouring unit is the single most common cause of rejection and forced removal.
- Not blocking the five-foot way. Projecting and hanging signs must leave the covered walkway clear and keep the required headroom.
- Not covering windows, fire exits or ventilation. This is a fire-safety condition, and BOMBA clearance is part of several councils' application packs.
A typical Malaysian shoplot has a 20-22 ft frontage. After allowing for the fascia edges and the neighbouring boundary, the usable signboard width is normally around 18-20 ft. That, not the council's 40 ft ceiling, is what you are actually designing to.
How Tall Should the Letters Be?

Sizing the board is only half the job. If the lettering is too small, a compliant signboard still fails commercially.
The established industry rule of thumb comes from the United States Sign Council: roughly 1 inch of capital letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance for text that is just readable. For text that reads comfortably at a glance — which is what you want for a shopfront seen from a moving car — use 1 inch per 4 feet instead.
| Viewing Distance | Minimum Letter Height (just readable) | Recommended (comfortable) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m (33 ft) | 85 mm | 210 mm |
| 15 m (49 ft) | 125 mm | 310 mm |
| 20 m (66 ft) | 170 mm | 420 mm |
| 30 m (98 ft) | 250 mm | 625 mm |
| 50 m (164 ft) | 420 mm | 1,040 mm |
Letter height is not the only variable — stroke width, colour contrast, illumination, mounting height and how fast the viewer is moving all matter. But if your business name is 100 mm tall on a sign read from across a four-lane road, no material or lighting choice will rescue it.
One Malaysian-specific complication: your Bahasa Malaysia text must be the most prominent on the sign. In Kuala Lumpur, DBKL requires the Bahasa Malaysia text to be 30% larger than any other language, positioned top-left or centre. Size your BM line first, then fit everything else beneath it.
Standard Signboard Sizes in Malaysia

There is no legally defined "standard size", but after fabricating signage for shoplots, cafes, clinics and offices across Selangor and KL, these are the sizes we build most often:
| Sign Type | Typical Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shopfront fascia signboard | 18-20 ft (W) x 3-4 ft (H) | Sized to a standard 20-22 ft shoplot frontage |
| Lightbox signboard | 4 ft, 6 ft or 8 ft widths x 2-3 ft (H) | Built in standard frame widths to control cost |
| 3D box-up letters (shopfront) | 300-600 mm letter height | Matches a 20-30 m viewing distance |
| 3D letters (indoor / reception) | 150-300 mm letter height | Read from 5-10 m |
| Double-sided projecting sign | Up to 7 ft (H) x 3 ft (W) | DBKL cap; check clearance in other councils |
| Office door / room sign | 200 x 100 mm to 300 x 150 mm | Read at arm's length |
Material choice interacts with size: a large sign in the wrong material will sag, warp or fade far faster in Malaysian sun and rain. Our signboard materials comparison and how shopfront signage is made cover which build suits which span.
Why Size Sets Your Annual Licence Fee
This is the part most business owners discover too late: many councils charge the signboard licence per square metre, every year. An oversized sign is not a one-time cost — it is a recurring one.
MPAJ's published rates show the structure clearly:
| Signboard Type | Annual Fee |
|---|---|
| Non-illuminated, up to 5 sqm | RM100 |
| Non-illuminated, each additional sqm | RM10 per sqm |
| Illuminated, up to 8 sqm | RM150 |
| Illuminated, each additional sqm | RM15 per sqm |
Worked example: an illuminated lightbox of 10 sqm in Ampang Jaya costs RM150 for the first 8 sqm plus RM15 x 2 sqm = RM180 per year, before processing and printing fees. Klang applies a similar per-sqm structure at slightly different rates.
The practical lesson: size your sign for legibility at your actual viewing distance, not for maximum coverage. Two extra square metres you did not need is a bill you pay annually for as long as the sign is up. For full pricing of the sign itself, see our signboard price guide.
Five Size Mistakes That Get Signs Rejected
- Wider than the shop lot. Overhanging your neighbour's frontage. Rejected almost every time.
- Bahasa Malaysia text too small. A layout where English or Chinese dominates fails the DBP check before the council even assesses the dimensions.
- Ignoring floor restrictions. Putting a double-sided vertical sign above the first floor in KL, or a large sign on the 5th floor and above without a structural engineer report and public liability insurance.
- Blocking the five-foot way. A projecting sign hung too low. MBSA requires 2.6 m clearance; other councils have their own figure.
- Designing before checking. Ordering fabrication, then discovering the approved size is smaller. The mockup goes to the council first — always.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum size for a signboard in Malaysia?
There is no single national maximum. Each local council sets its own limit. DBKL in Kuala Lumpur publishes specific figures: double-sided vertical signs up to 7 ft (H) x 3 ft (W) on the first floor only, and horizontal signs up to 40 ft (L) x 4 ft (W) on the 4th floor and below. Several Selangor councils, including MPAJ and Klang, cap the signboard at 30% of the building facade area instead.
What is the standard size of a signboard in Malaysia?
There is no legally fixed standard size, but most Malaysian shoplots have a 20-22 ft frontage, so the common shopfront signboard we fabricate is roughly 18-20 ft wide and 3-4 ft tall. Lightbox signs are usually built in 4 ft, 6 ft or 8 ft widths, and 3D box-up letters for a shopfront are typically 300-600 mm tall.
Can my signboard be wider than my shop?
No. Almost every Malaysian council requires the signboard to stay within the width of your own shop lot frontage. Overhanging your neighbour's lot is one of the most common reasons an application is rejected or an installed sign is ordered down.
Does signboard size affect the licence fee?
Yes, directly. Many councils price the annual licence per square metre. MPAJ charges RM100 for a non-illuminated signboard up to 5 sqm and RM10 for each additional sqm, and RM150 for an illuminated signboard up to 8 sqm plus RM15 per additional sqm. Making a sign larger raises the fee every single year, not just once.
How tall should the letters on my signboard be?
Use the United States Sign Council rule of thumb: about 1 inch of capital letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance for a letter that is just readable, or 1 inch per 4 feet for text that reads comfortably at a glance. For a shopfront read from about 20 m (66 ft) across a road, that means roughly 170 mm minimum and about 420 mm for comfortable reading.
Do signboard height limits change by floor?
In Kuala Lumpur, yes. DBKL restricts double-sided vertical signs to the first floor, allows horizontal signs on the 4th floor and below, and requires additional approval, public liability insurance and a structural engineer report for large signboards on the 5th floor and above.
How much clearance does a projecting signboard need?
It varies by council. MBSA in Shah Alam requires projecting signs to keep a minimum clearance of 2.6 metres from ground level. As a general rule across Malaysia, a projecting sign must not obstruct the five-foot way, pedestrian walkways, drains, road sightlines or emergency access.
Is signboard thickness regulated too?
In some places. DBKL limits lightbox and 3D lettering signage to a maximum of 30 cm thickness, and requires a licensed electrician for illuminated installations. Thickness also affects how far your sign projects from the wall, which is what the clearance rules are really protecting.
