P Sticker Placement in Malaysia: Where JPJ Says It Goes

Left or right, front or back, red on white or white on red? What JPJ and PDRM actually publish about the P sign, the L sign, the 2-year probation and the penalties.

The question behind this page

"I just got my P licence. Where exactly do I stick the P sticker, left or right, and what happens if I get it wrong?"

Key Takeaways

  • On a car, JPJ shows the P sign at the top corner on the left side of both the front and rear windscreen. In a Malaysian car, the left is the passenger side, not the driver's side.
  • JPJ's own driver manual shows the car P sign as a 15 cm x 15 cm red square with a white letter P. The motorcycle version is 10 cm x 10 cm.
  • On a motorcycle, one P goes above or below the headlamp and one above or below the rear number plate.
  • Probation lasts 2 years. You must also carry your licence and keep your alcohol level at 0.00%.
  • Breaking a P condition can mean a JPJ compound (RM150 to RM300 on JPJ's list) or a court fine of up to RM2,000 for a first offence. At 20 demerit points the P licence is cancelled.
  • JPJ sets a design, not a brand. We found no JPJ scheme that "approves" individual P stickers, so check the size, colours and position yourself.

Disclaimer: This is general information, not legal advice. It is based on JPJ's driver education manuals, JPJ's compound list and PDRM's published guidance. Rules and compound rates can change, so confirm with JPJ (jpj.gov.my) or your nearest JPJ office if you are unsure. Last checked October 2026.

You've passed, you're holding two P stickers, and everyone gives you a different answer on where they go. This guide goes back to what JPJ and PDRM actually publish, so you can stick them once and stop worrying.

P sticker placement on a car: left or right?

The short answer: left side, top corner, on both the front and rear windscreen.

JPJ's driver education manual for car learners (Kurikulum Pendidikan Pemandu, Kelas D) says probationary drivers must display the P sign "di atas penjuru sebelah kiri cermin hadapan dan belakang motokar", which means at the top left corner of the car's front and rear windscreen. The manual includes a drawing. From the front, the sign sits on your right as you face the car. From the back, it sits on your left as you face the car. Both positions are on the car's left side.

PDRM's published notice on probationary licences says the same: upper left of the front windscreen and upper left of the rear windscreen.

Why so many websites get this wrong

Plenty of pages online say "top left (driver's side)". That can't be right here: we drive on the left and the driver sits on the right, so left is the passenger side. From the driver's seat, your front P belongs in the top corner farthest from you. Keep both signs clearly visible from outside, not hidden behind a sunshade strip or dark tint band.

Hatchbacks, MPVs and SUVs follow the same rule. If a rear wiper or spoiler gets in the way, our suggestion (not JPJ wording) is to move the sign down a little while keeping it on the left side and fully visible.

What the official P sign looks like

Many sellers and articles describe a "red P on a white background". The drawing in JPJ's own manuals shows the opposite: a solid red square with a white capital P.

SignSize (JPJ manual)Colours (JPJ drawing)Where
P for cars15 cm x 15 cmWhite P on a red squareTop left corner, front and rear windscreen
P for motorcycles10 cm x 10 cmWhite P on a red squareAbove or below headlamp; above or below rear number plate
L for learners (car and motorcycle)15 cm wide x 16.5 cm tallRed L on a blue backgroundFront and rear of the vehicle

The motorcycle manual even gives the letter's proportions: in the 10 cm sign, the P is 8 cm tall with a 2 cm stroke. This matters because JPJ's compound list has separate offences for not displaying the P and for displaying one not according to specification ("tidak mengikut spesifikasi"). A pastel P with cartoon characters is still a P, but it is not the P in JPJ's drawing.

Where to put the P on a motorcycle

Riders get a smaller sign and a different position. JPJ's motorcycle manual (Kurikulum Pendidikan Pemandu, Modul Motosikal) says:

  • Front: above or below the headlamp.
  • Rear: above or below the rear registration number plate.

The manual's photos show the front P on the fairing just under the headlamp and the rear P on the mudguard just above the number plate. The size is 10 cm x 10 cm. Our own tips: never cover any part of the number plate, and on the curved panels of a kapchai or scooter, clean the spot with alcohol and press the sticker from the centre outwards so the edges don't lift in the rain.

How long you need the P, and the other conditions

The probationary driving licence (Lesen Memandu Percubaan, PDL or LMP) is issued after you pass the Part 2 and Part 3 practical tests. JPJ's manuals state that the probation period is 2 years, counted from the date the PDL is issued.

During those 2 years, every time you drive or ride you must meet three conditions, as listed by JPJ and PDRM:

  1. Carry your probationary licence with you.
  2. Keep the alcohol level in your breath, blood and urine at 0.00%.
  3. Display the P sign at the front and rear of the vehicle.

Adding another licence class during probation doesn't restart the clock: JPJ's manual says the new class follows your first class's 2-year probation. When probation ends, convert to a competent driving licence (CDL). JPJ accepts the conversion from 7 days before probation ends, and you must do it within 1 year. Driving on an expired PDL is its own offence on JPJ's compound list.

We found no JPJ rule setting a special speed or passenger limit for P drivers. The three conditions above are what JPJ and PDRM list; normal road rules apply to everyone.

Penalties: compound, court fine and demerit points

Compound (saman)

JPJ's compound list, updated to 1 January 2026, has entries under Rule 15A(1)(b) of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licence) Rules 1992 for not displaying the P (front, rear or both) and for displaying a P that does not follow the specification. For cars, it shows RM150 if paid within 15 days, RM200 within 16 to 30 days and RM300 within 31 to 60 days. Failing to produce your PDL and the PDL alcohol offence are listed too. Go by the amount on your own notice, as rates can change.

Court fine

In court, breaking a P condition is an offence under Rule 15A, chargeable under Section 119 of the Road Transport Act 1987, according to PDRM and JPJ's manuals. The fine is up to RM2,000 or up to 6 months' jail for a first offence, and up to RM4,000 or 12 months' jail, or both, after that.

Demerit points and cancellation

Under KEJARA (Road Transport (Demerit Points) Rules 2017), JPJ's FAQ says a PDL can be cancelled at 20 demerit points. P drivers get no warning or suspension stage first. After cancellation you cannot drive, hold or apply for any licence, learner licence included, for 12 months from surrendering the PDL, and then you redo training, tests and probation. Driving while cancelled carries a fine of RM3,000 to RM10,000 or up to 3 years' jail, per JPJ's demerit media statement.

Many sites still say "10 demerit points" for no P sign. That figure comes from older KEJARA lists. The 2017 rules list 23 scheduled offences, and we could not confirm from JPJ's current material whether P display is one of them. Don't rely on the old number. Just display the sign.

The L sign for learner drivers

Learners hold a Learner Driving Licence (Lesen Belajar Memandu, LDL), issued after the Part 1 theory test. JPJ says it is issued for 3 or 6 months at a time and can be renewed, up to a maximum of 2 years from the first issue.

JPJ's L sign is a red L on a blue background, 15 cm wide and 16.5 cm tall, in both the car and motorcycle manuals. The L itself is 13 cm tall and 10 cm wide with a 4 cm stroke. Learner conditions from those manuals:

  • Display the L at the front and rear. Unlike the P, no exact spot is given.
  • Car learners may only drive with a driving institute instructor.
  • No passengers or load, for car and motorcycle learners alike.

JPJ's compound list has matching entries for a missing or off-spec L, driving without an instructor and carrying a pillion on a learner motorcycle. Your driving school car will already carry its L signs, so this matters most for learner riders.

Suction cups, tint and other practical questions

Close-up of a removable acrylic P sign held on a car windscreen with suction cups

Is a removable suction-cup P sign allowed?

JPJ's material sets the size, design and position. It doesn't say the sign must be a sticker, and we found nothing banning a removable one. So a suction-cup sign that matches the design and sits in the right corner should meet the same requirement. The catch is human: if it falls off or you forget it, you aren't displaying it.

It suits a shared car. The conditions bind the probationary licence holder while driving, so a parent on a full licence can take it down and you put it back before you drive.

Inside or outside the glass, and tint?

JPJ doesn't say, only that it must be clearly visible from outside. Our suggestion: inside the glass if your tint is light, where car wash brushes can't scrape it. If your rear tint is dark enough to hide the sign, put the rear one outside.

Removing it when probation ends

Warm it with a hair dryer, peel slowly at a low angle, and clean leftover glue with a little isopropyl alcohol. Never scrape with a blade over defogger lines or tint film.

Where to buy a P sticker, and what "JPJ approved" means

P stickers are sold by driving institutes, shops and online marketplaces, and many people look for them at chains like MR DIY. We can't vouch for any shop's stock. Wherever you buy, check three things:

  1. Size: 15 cm x 15 cm for a car, 10 cm x 10 cm for a motorcycle.
  2. Colour and design: a white P on a solid red square, matching JPJ's drawing.
  3. Quantity: two per vehicle, one front and one rear.

What about "JPJ approved" or "JPJ certified" on listings? We could not find any JPJ scheme that approves or certifies P sticker products. JPJ publishes a specification, and a sign either matches it or doesn't. Read "JPJ approved" as "made to JPJ's size" and check for yourself.

The sign also has to survive 2 years of sun and rain, so a thin sticker that fades or peels early just means buying again. Vinyl and acrylic hold up better. Sorting out the rest of your windscreen? Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I put the P sticker on my car, left or right?

On the left side of the car, at the top corner of both the front and rear windscreen. In a Malaysian right-hand-drive car, that is the passenger side. JPJ's driver manual and PDRM both give this position.

Is the Malaysian P sign red on white or white on red?

JPJ's driver education manuals show a white capital P on a solid red square, 15 cm x 15 cm for cars and 10 cm x 10 cm for motorcycles. Many sellers describe it the other way round, so check against the JPJ drawing.

How long do I need to display the P sticker?

For the whole 2-year probation, every time you drive. Then convert to a competent licence (CDL) within 1 year.

What is the fine for not displaying the P sticker?

JPJ's compound list shows RM150 to RM300 for cars, depending on how fast you pay. In court under Section 119 of the Road Transport Act 1987, a first offence carries a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to 6 months' jail.

How many demerit points before my P licence is cancelled?

20 points, according to JPJ's KEJARA FAQ. You then cannot hold or apply for any licence for 12 months.

Can I use a removable suction-cup P sign instead of a sticker?

We found no rule against it. JPJ specifies size, design and position, not material. It must match the design, sit in the correct corner and be up whenever you drive.

Where does the P go on a motorcycle?

Above or below the headlamp, and above or below the rear number plate, using a 10 cm x 10 cm sign.

Are "JPJ approved" P stickers better?

We found no JPJ scheme that approves sticker products. Any sticker matching JPJ's size, colours and design does the job.
