How thick is the mat and why does thickness matter?

Is it heat resistant — can I put hot pots on it?
It resists everyday warmth like plates, mugs and serving dishes, but it is not heatproof. Always use a trivet or pad under very hot pots and pans straight off the stove to avoid softening or marking the PVC.
Does it have a plastic smell?
