Walk through any busy food street in Bangsar, SS15 Subang Jaya, or Bukit Bintang, and you will notice one thing the most successful restaurants and cafes have in common: an A-frame signboard sitting right outside their door, announcing today's specials, a lunch promotion, or simply saying "We're Open — Come In!"
A-frame signboards (also called sandwich boards or sidewalk signs) are one of the most cost-effective marketing tools for F&B businesses in Malaysia. They sit on the pavement, catch the eye of passing foot traffic, and can be updated or moved in seconds. No electricity, no installation — just place it and let it work.
This guide covers everything you need to know about choosing, designing, and ordering an A-frame signboard in Malaysia — whether you run a restaurant, cafe, retail shop, or hotel.
What Is an A-Frame Signboard?
An A-frame signboard is a freestanding, double-sided display that folds into an "A" shape when viewed from the side. It stands on its own without any wall mounting or hardware. The two panels lean against each other, creating a stable triangle that stays upright even in moderate wind.
Why "A-frame"? The name comes from the shape — when you look at it from the side, the two panels form the letter "A". In Bahasa Malaysia, it is commonly called papan tanda A-frame or simply stand papan menu.
A-frame signboards are popular worldwide, but they are especially useful in Malaysia where outdoor dining, walk-in traffic, and street-level visibility drive a huge portion of F&B revenue.
Types of A-Frame Signboards at UMAKE
At our factory in Balakong, Selangor, we manufacture two main types of A-frame signboards. Each serves a different purpose and budget.
1. Stainless Steel A-Frame Signage
The stainless steel A-frame is our premium option, designed for businesses that need a signboard they can rely on every single day, rain or shine.
Key features:

- Panel: Replaceable insert panel — swap your menu or promotion without replacing the whole frame
- Stability: Heavy enough to resist toppling in typical Malaysian wind conditions
- Lifespan: 5-10+ years with proper care — the frame is essentially permanent
- Look: Professional, premium appearance that elevates your brand image
Best for: Established restaurants, hotel lobbies, corporate reception areas, and any business that wants a permanent, reusable signboard with a premium look.

2. Acrylic A-Frame Sign
The acrylic A-frame is our budget-friendly option — perfect for new businesses, pop-up stores, and anyone who wants a clean, modern look without a large upfront investment.
Key features:
- Material: Laser-cut acrylic panels with precision edges
- Weight: Significantly lighter than stainless steel — easy for staff to carry in and out daily
- Customization: Full-colour UV printing directly on the acrylic surface — your logo, menu, and images in vivid detail
- Colours: Available in clear, frosted, white, black, and custom colours
- Cost: Lower price point makes it accessible for small businesses and startups
- Replacement: If your menu changes seasonally, ordering a new acrylic panel is affordable
Best for: New cafes, bubble tea shops, pop-up events, retail promotions, and businesses with frequently changing menus or offers.
Stainless Steel vs Acrylic A-Frame: Which Should You Choose?
| Feature | Stainless Steel A-Frame | Acrylic A-Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | 5-10+ years | 2-4 years |
| Weight | Heavy (stable in wind) | Lightweight (easy to move) |
| Weather Resistance | Excellent — rust-proof | Good — UV resistant coating |
| Appearance | Premium, industrial | Modern, colourful |
| Customization | Replaceable inserts | Full-colour UV print |
| Panel Updates | Swap insert only | Replace whole panel |
| Best For | Restaurants, hotels, corporate | Cafes, pop-ups, retail |
| Price Range | RM 150 - RM 500+ | RM 80 - RM 250 |
Tip: If you are unsure, start with an acrylic A-frame to test whether sidewalk signage works for your location. Once you see the results, upgrade to stainless steel for a permanent solution. Many of our customers in Bangsar and TTDI did exactly this.
Best Uses for A-Frame Signboards
Sidewalk A-frame with a witty quote — a simple way to create personality
Menu-style A-frame highlighting drinks — clear and inviting
A-frame signboards are versatile. Here are the most common — and most effective — ways Malaysian businesses use them:
1. Restaurant Daily Menu & Specials Board
This is the number one use case. Place your A-frame outside your restaurant during lunch and dinner hours featuring today's specials, set meal promotions, or your most popular dishes. Restaurants along Jalan Alor, Changkat Bukit Bintang, and SS15 Subang Jaya use this strategy to pull in walk-in customers who are still deciding where to eat.
2. Cafe Sidewalk Sign
Cafes thrive on ambiance and foot traffic. A well-designed A-frame with your signature drinks, breakfast menu, or a witty quote ("But First, Coffee") creates an inviting presence on the pavement. This works particularly well in cafe-dense areas like TTDI, Damansara Uptown, Taman Tun, and Petaling Jaya.
3. Retail Store Promotions & Sales
Having a sale? New arrivals? Place an A-frame at your shopfront to announce it. Unlike posters taped to a window, an A-frame sits at eye level on the walkway and physically enters the shopper's path. Retail stores in malls and shop lots in Sri Petaling, Puchong, and Kepong use these effectively during seasonal sales.
4. Event Wayfinding & Directional Signage
Corporate events, weddings, conferences, and exhibitions all benefit from A-frame signboards as directional signs. Point guests to the registration counter, parking area, or banquet hall. They can be placed, moved, and removed in seconds — no wall damage, no tape residue.
5. Hotel Lobby & Reception Area
Hotels use stainless steel A-frames in their lobby to display restaurant menus, spa promotions, event schedules, or check-in instructions. The premium look of stainless steel matches hotel aesthetics perfectly.
Why A-Frame Signboards Work for Malaysian Businesses
Malaysia's business landscape has several characteristics that make A-frame signboards especially effective:
- High foot traffic culture: Malaysians love eating out. Areas like Bangsar, Bukit Bintang, SS15, and Damansara have constant pedestrian traffic, especially during meal times. An A-frame puts your message directly in their path.
- Outdoor dining is the norm: Many Malaysian restaurants and cafes have outdoor seating or al-fresco areas. An A-frame naturally fits into this environment.
- Portability: Staff can bring the signboard inside at closing time or during heavy rain. Next morning, place it back out. No tools needed.
- Reusable: Unlike banners that tear or posters that fade, an A-frame (especially stainless steel) lasts for years. Change the insert panel when your menu or promotion changes — no need to buy a new sign every time.
- Double-sided visibility: Pedestrians coming from both directions see your message. This is twice the exposure compared to a wall-mounted sign.
- No permits for private property: Placing an A-frame within your shopfront area or on your own property typically does not require a local council permit. (Always check with your building management for shared walkways.)

Design Tips for Maximum Impact
An A-frame signboard is only as effective as its design. Here are practical tips based on what we have seen work best for our F&B customers:
Keep It Readable from 3 Metres Away
Your headline text should be large enough to read from at least 3 metres away. Use bold, high-contrast fonts — dark text on a light background or white text on a dark background. Avoid script fonts or thin typefaces that disappear at a distance.
Use High Contrast Colours
The most readable combinations for outdoor signage are:
- Black text on white or cream background
- White text on dark navy, black, or forest green
- Dark text on bright yellow (highest visibility at a distance)
Avoid light grey on white, red on dark backgrounds, or any combination where the text blends into the background. Remember, your sign will be viewed in bright Malaysian sunlight — glare can wash out low-contrast designs.
Go Bilingual: English + Bahasa Malaysia
If your customer base is mixed (which is most of Malaysia), include both English and BM on your A-frame. A simple approach: headline in English, subtitle or description in BM. For Chinese-majority areas like Kepong, Puchong, or Cheras, consider adding Chinese text as well.
Add a QR Code
Link to your online menu, Google Maps location, or WhatsApp ordering page. QR codes bridge the gap between your physical signboard and your digital presence. Many cafes in KL now use QR codes on their A-frames to let customers browse the full menu before even walking in.
Highlight 2-3 Items, Not the Full Menu
Do not try to fit your entire menu on the A-frame. Focus on 2-3 signature dishes or today's special. The goal is to create curiosity and draw people in, not to replace your menu. Think of it as a movie trailer, not the full movie.
Pro Tip: Include pricing on your A-frame. Malaysians are price-conscious, and showing "Nasi Lemak Set — RM 12.90" is more effective than just "Try Our Nasi Lemak!" because it removes the uncertainty that prevents walk-ins.

Weather Durability: Will It Survive Malaysian Rain & Sun?
This is the question every business owner asks — and rightfully so. Malaysia's tropical climate means year-round heat (30-35°C), high humidity (70-90%), heavy monsoon rain, and intense UV exposure. Here is how each material holds up:
Stainless Steel A-Frame
- Rain: 304-grade stainless steel is rust-proof and corrosion-resistant. Rain will not damage it at all.
- Sun: Stainless steel does not fade, warp, or discolour under UV exposure. The frame will look the same in Year 5 as it did on Day 1.
- Humidity: Unlike mild steel or aluminium, 304 SS handles Malaysia's humidity without oxidation.
- Wind: The weight of stainless steel provides natural stability. In our experience, the A-frame stays upright in normal wind conditions. For exposed, windy locations, we can add rubber feet for extra grip.
Acrylic A-Frame
- Rain: Acrylic is waterproof. Rain simply beads off the surface. However, we recommend bringing it indoors during heavy storms to prevent it from being blown over.
- Sun: Our acrylic panels use UV-resistant coatings. Printed colours remain vivid for 2-3 years in direct sun. The acrylic itself will not yellow for 3-5 years.
- Humidity: No issues — acrylic does not absorb moisture or swell.
- Wind: Lighter weight means it can be blown over in strong gusts. Best practice: bring it in during storms or use a sandbag weight at the base.
Bottom line: Both materials handle Malaysian weather well for their expected lifespan. If your A-frame lives outdoors 24/7 without shelter, go stainless steel. If staff bring it in at night (which most cafes do), acrylic is perfectly fine.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an A-frame signboard?
An A-frame signboard (also called a sandwich board or sidewalk sign) is a freestanding, double-sided display that folds into an "A" shape. It stands on its own without wall mounting and is commonly used by restaurants, cafes, and retail stores to attract foot traffic. In Bahasa Malaysia, it is called papan tanda A-frame.
Which material is better for an A-frame signboard — stainless steel or acrylic?
It depends on your needs. Stainless steel is best for permanent outdoor use — it is rust-proof, heavy (wind-resistant), and lasts 5-10+ years. Acrylic is best for businesses on a budget or those that change their signage frequently — it is lightweight, affordable, and supports full-colour printing. Most established restaurants choose stainless steel; new cafes and pop-ups start with acrylic.
Can the A-frame signboard withstand Malaysian rain and sun?
Yes. Our stainless steel A-frames use 304-grade steel that is completely rust-proof and UV-resistant — it handles Malaysia's tropical weather without any degradation. Acrylic A-frames are waterproof and use UV-resistant coatings, though we recommend bringing them indoors during heavy storms due to their lighter weight. Both materials are built for the Malaysian climate.
Can I change the content on my A-frame signboard?
Yes. With our stainless steel A-frame, the insert panels are replaceable — keep the frame and swap the panel whenever your menu or promotion changes. With acrylic A-frames, you would order a new printed panel (starting from RM 30). Some customers also use whiteboard or chalkboard inserts for daily menu changes.
What sizes are available for A-frame signboards?
Standard sizes are A2 (420 x 594mm) and A1 (594 x 841mm). We also manufacture custom sizes — from small countertop A-frames for reception desks to large 1-metre-tall pavement signs. Just tell us the dimensions you need and we will produce it.
How much does an A-frame signboard cost in Malaysia?
Acrylic A-frames start from around RM 80 for A2 size and up to RM 250 for A1. Stainless steel A-frames range from RM 200 (A2) to RM 500+ (A1). Replacement insert panels cost RM 30-80. All prices include custom design, free design proof with unlimited revisions, and delivery within Peninsular Malaysia.
How long does production take?
Acrylic A-frames take 3-5 working days. Stainless steel A-frames take 5-10 working days. Delivery within Peninsular Malaysia adds 1-3 business days. East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak) delivery takes 3-7 business days. Express production is available for urgent orders — WhatsApp us to discuss.
Do I need a permit to place an A-frame signboard outside my shop?
If you place the signboard within your own shopfront area or on private property, a permit is generally not required. However, if the signboard extends onto a public walkway, local council regulations (DBKL, MBPJ, MBSA, etc.) may apply. We recommend checking with your building management or local council for walkways shared with other tenants.
